About

Making movies is a hugely creative, collaborative and expensive process. Hence, it is immensely important to do it well, right and beautifully. This is the platform built to follow the production phases involved in filmmaking across Africa and allows us to share our thoughts on both the process and the end product. This is where we call Mellywood’s Urban Central; a platform by filmmakers and a collaboration with Studio|M.

Over time, we intend to become the community of film enthusiasts that includes you. For us, the most exciting aspect of the Urban Central is the critique section called Scope, which we intend to make into the defacto firsthand go-to movie feedback/critic page on the web; particularly for African-made movies. Mellywood's Scope, which contains articles referred to as scopes, is where we break down movies: before, during and after production; and also critique such movies once out for public viewing. Our reviews are unbiased and as objective as possible, however we cannot promise not to be brutal with our opinions. While such opinions are by no means the holy grail, our editorial is independent and each scope is a holistic view of the writer of such piece. As such, scopes are not influenced for favourability, not patronisable and are not on the market to be purchasable either. Scopes are fact-based and technically-driven rather than a work of art like filmmaking.

We are just starting out but it promises to be exciting already.

…and for the daring young filmmakers, we love them and intend to support them as much as possible on the platform. If we are ever excessively fond of a movie, it is most definitely the work of art of young filmmakers.
