I thought I knew Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, but more than just the first woman to drive a car in Nigeria, this movie revealed a more nuanced and powerful woman whose impact on politics, education, and social justice remains a notable feat till date.

I thought I knew Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, but this movie revealed a more nuanced and powerful woman than I ever imagined. My previous understanding of her was limited to her being the first woman to drive a car in Nigeria, which I learned in secondary school. However, this film showed me the depth of her impact on politics, education, and social justice. She was a true lioness, leading a nation of women in protest and chasing the Alake out of his palace.

THE PLOT

The film tells the inspiring story of Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti's life, from her childhood to adulthood. It highlights her trailblazing experience as the first girl to attend an all-boys school in Abeokuta, where she formed a lasting bond with her future husband. Funmilayo's journey continues with her university education abroad and subsequent return to Nigeria, where she becomes a dedicated teacher.

A pivotal moment in her life occurs when she visits her sister-in-law at the market and discovers the excessive taxes women are forced to pay. This sparks her passion for advocacy, leading her to establish the Abeokuta Women's Club. Although the club initially fails to yield the desired results, Funmilayo perseveres, uniting women from diverse social backgrounds to challenge the oppressive regime of the Alake.

The film culminates in a dramatic protest, where women from all walks of life come together to demand justice, braving numerous challenges and ultimately emerging victorious. This remarkable true story showcases Funmilayo's unwavering dedication to fighting for women's rights and her unshakeable belief in the power of unity and collective action.

THE GOOD

Kehinde Bankole's performance is undeniable proof of her exceptional talent. She brings an unbridled intensity to every scene, fully embodying the spirit of Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti. The entire cast delivers impressive performances, doing justice to their respective roles.

The film's technical aspects are equally impressive, with outstanding picture quality, display, and cinematography. The attention to detail in the camera angles is exquisite, adding depth to the narrative.

What sets this film apart is its bold departure from the popular myths surrounding Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti. Instead, it sheds light on her remarkable personality and life history, revealing a fearless and passionate woman leader who fought tirelessly for justice.

And not just the myopic version of her being the first woman to drive a car in Nigeria.

IN THE END

The movie's underlying message is a powerful testament to the strength of women's unity, transcending social boundaries to achieve a common goal. It highlights the historic role women have played in shaping society and their unwavering support for one another.

A truly inspiring and thought-provoking film.
